AN ANALYSIS OF ENTAILMENT IN BARACK OBAMA’S FAREWELL SPEECH (A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS)

This research aims at analyzing Barack Obama's Farewell speech in term of pragmatic study. The problem concerns on how entailment is described in that speech. The objective of this research is to identify entailment in Barrack's Obama farewell speech. There are many things in pragmatic study can be interpreted which is supported by context usage of language, one of them is through this kind of pragmatic study, entailment. Considering that there must be a meaning behinds a certain language people use, the reason why he/she uses it. As in this study, the researcher uses entailment theory to reveal hidden and disclosed meaning that are presented in Barack Obama's farewell speech. Every that is word conveyed by Barack Obama in that speech has a certain meaning. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. Therefore, the data in this research are in the form of utterances conveyed by Barack Obama. The source of the data is the transcript of Barack Obama's farewell speech. The data are collected by selecting sentences containing entailment, classifying the data to determine whether the obtained data is entailment or not. The data are analyzed through the process of presenting, interpreting, and concluding. This research showes that among four types of entailment, three of them are often appear in Barack Obama's farewell speech: one-way entailment (5 times), two-way entailment (12 times), and negative entailment (2 times). The most dominant type of entailment in that speech tech is two-way entailment. It is followed then by one-way entailment in the second place which commonly used by a speaker in speech. The last place is negative entailment since it has limits in formulating entailment. This is due to most of speakers talk more about positive things than the negative ones in speech texts.
