Analysis is done by applying Brian McHale theory to find world next door in the novel that can be categorized as a postmodernist work. The research question of this study is formulated: “How world next door represented in Gaimans stardust novel?”. The objective of this study is to investigate world next door as supernatural world which is represented in stardust. The source of data in this study is stardust novel by Neil Gaiman published in 1998. The data was collected through annotating, previewing, and interpreting to get complete analysis about world next door in stardust. The researcher found that: first world next door in stardust novel is the existing of plural world that is a normal world and supernatural world. Supernatural world itself divided into a fairy world and immortal world. Every world has their respective boundary. This plurality is characterized as postmodernist fiction through the present of plural world as appearance in world next door. Second, hesitation in stardust novel is ontological indeterminacy about the transgressing boundary. In the novel, Dunstan and Tristan transgress the boundary from normal world to supernatural world. Through the transgressing boundary Dunstan and Tristan has fantastic experience that is do not or exist in normal world such as meeting a fairy creature and magical things. Third, banalities in stardust novel are magical things such as a market that occur every nine years, myth, song, and old nursery rhyme. The myth on stardust novel shows the parody towards beauty myth in Victorian era, history of English British and spirit of Victorian era. Fourth, resistance in stardust novel is a confrontation of agonistic struggle between normal, supernatural, and immortal world. This resistance is a contrastive banality from vows, song, and rhyme. There are some issues on the novel such as nature and capitalism through ontology indeterminacy. The last, from world to world is bridging the gap of normal world and supernatural world. From world to world occurs when Stromhold taken over that is when Tristan and Yvaine become king and queen in Stromhold. Tristan is symbol of noble blood and Yvaine is symbol of monarchy. The present both of them is breaking the monarchy that every lord should be a royal blood and gender. This phenomena is a depiction ideal world in postmodern era that every peace and prosperous will be exist if the people accept the difference and plurality. Keywords: ontology, epistemology, normal world, supernatural world ,hesitation, banality, resistance, from world to world, fiction, fantastic. |
