This research focuses at analyzing the types of reference, anaphora and cataphora reference which presented in The Piano novel by Rosemary Border. Reference is one word refers to the other word. Reference happens when the word in a sentence refers to the previous or the next sentence. The research question is: How are the anaphora and cataphora reference presented in The Piano novel by Rosemary Border?. The methodology of this research is a descriptive qualitative with discourse analysis approach. The objective of the study is to analyze how are the anaphora and cataphora reference presented in The Piano novel by Rosemary Border. The data are analyzed based on the cohesion theory by Halliday and Hasan in their book entitled Cohesion in English (1976). The source of data in this research is The Piano novel sentences by Rosemary Border. The data were collected through reading the novel carefully, collection the sentence that contains anaphora and cataphora reference to analyzed, coding the data to make easier in classification by using the color, and data reduction. Some techniques in analyzing the data consists of identifying, classifying the data that need to be analyzed, analyzing the data, and conclusion based on the analysis. It is used as tool to analyzing the findings in The Piano novel by Rosemary Border. The result of this research found 40 sentences, they are anaphora and cataphora reference have the same number of sentences. Anaphora reference 20 sentences, such as she refers to Linda had mentioned before. While, cataphora reference 20 sentence, such as his refers to Tony that presented later in the sentence. Based on the finding, the suggestions are recommeded to the next researcher can use the different object of the research. Therefore, the content of the data is different finding.
