ASRAF, N1D2 15 023, An Analysis of Positive and Negative Politeness in the Interview Transcript between Piers Morgan and Donald Trump in Spectator.co.uk. Under the supervisions of La Aso (as the Supervisor) and Ela Martisa (as the Co Supervisor).
In the interview between Piers Morgan and Donald Trump there is positive and negative politeness that have not revealed yet. Therefore this research aims to describe how positive and negative politeness strategies which are used by Piers Morgan and Donald Trump, and also to find out the most dominant positive or negative politeness used by Piers Morgan and Donald Trump in the interview which held on Thursday, 25th January 2018 under the theory of politeness strategies which proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). This research employs descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the object of the research. The data source was the transcription of the interview between Piers Morgan and Donald Trump which was taken from the internet source, it was (http://blogs.spectator.co.uk). The data analysis reported that the participants of the interview employed positive and negative politeness strategies to save one another’s face. Positive politeness that was found, strategy 1 (Notice, attend to hearer (his interest, wants, needs, goods)), strategy 3 (Intensify interest to hearer), strategy 5 (Seek agreement), strategy 6 (Avoid disagreement), strategy 7 (Presuppose/raise/assert common ground), strategy 12 (Include both speaker and hearer in the activity), strategy 13 (Give (or ask for) reason), and strategy 14 (Assume or assert reciprocity) and negative politeness that was found, strategy 2 (Question, hedge), strategy 3 (Be pessimistic), strategy 4 (Minimize the imposition), and strategy 5 (Give deference). The most dominant politeness strategy that was used in the interview transcript was negative politeness which appeared 42 times. The participants of the interview attempt to decrease and keep the social distance between them through positive and negative politeness strategies. Piers Morgan as the journalist employs more negative politeness strategies than Donald Trump which is the President of USA because powerless participants need to be more polite than powerful participant.
