EKA DWANTI PUTRI. (N1A5 14 O22). This Thesis Entitled “An Analysis of Speech Act Classification in President Obama’s Inaugural Address in ABC News” under the supervision of Ansor Putra (Supervisor) and Arman (Co.Supervisor).
President Obama's Inaugural Address in ABC News is a speech that contains a lot of things in terms of linguistic that has not been revealed especially in speech act classification. This study aims to describe the speech act classification which is used in President Obama's Inaugural Address. This study used descriptive qualitative method because the data are in form of words and utterances rather than the numbers. Therefore, the data in this research are in the form of utterances conveyed by Obama.The source of the data is the transcript of President Obama's Inaugural Address. The data are collected by selecting sentences containing speech act classification, classifying the data to determine whether the obtained data is speech act classification or not. The data are analyzed through the process of presenting, interpreting, and concluding. This study shows that among five types of speech act classification, four of them are often appear in President Obama's Inaugural Address: 6 utterance of representative speech act that consist 4 data of description and 2 data of conclusion, 3 utterance of expressive speech act that consist 2 data of praising and 1 data of thanking, 1 directive speech act that is asking data, 5 utterance of commissive speech act that is promising data. The most dominant type of speech act classification in that speech is representative speech act. It is followed then by commissive speech act. Then third place is expressive speech act. The last place is directive speech act. This is due in his speech Obama more expressed his vision and mission in leading the United States.
