THE EFFECT OF USING DISCOVERY TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT
AT SMP NEGERI 4 RAHA

This study investigated the effect of using Discovery technique to improve students’ English vocabulary achievement of the second grade students’ of SMPN 4 Raha. The purpose of this study is to find out a significant effect after using Discovery technique on the students’ English vocabulary achievement. This study applied pre-experimental design that was one group pre-test and post-test design. This study used discovery technique as a learning process for the students. The subject of this study was second grade students of SMPN 4 Raha who were registered in academy year 2017-2018. The population of this study was all of second grade students of SMPN 4 Raha consisted of 177. The technique of taking sample of this study was purposive sampling. The sample of this study was class VIII 6 consisting of 30 students’. The instrument of this study was vocabulary achievement test consists of 20 numbers. The result showed that there was a significant effect of using Discovery technique to improve students English vocabulary achievement. It was proved with the improvement of students were the students more active in the classroom rather than the teacher. Students can discover the words by themselves. It was supported with the mean score from pre-test and post-test. The mean score for pre-test was 49,83 and the mean score for post-test increases to 80,17. It was supported with the result of t-test, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0,000 with α = 0,05. H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted because the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is below the α value. It means that there was a significant effect of using Discovery Technique on students’ English vocabulary achievement of the second grade students of SMPN 4 Raha.
