Tracy K. Smith is a great poet of a world that is chosen as a poet laureate. Smith has many books of poetry and one of them is Life on Mars (2011). Inside the book, there are a lot of amazing poems covered with the words related to science. Sci-Fi, Don’t You Wonder, Sometimes? (Section 3), and The Universe as Primal Scream are covered in Life on Mars (2011). This study aims at analyzing the metaphor and to know the meaning of each revealed metaphors of the poems. In analyzing the metaphor, Richard and Leech’s theory related to tenor, vehicle, and ground of a metaphor is used. It is concluded that there are some metaphors found in the three selected poems of Tracy K. Smith, considering the tenor or the main topic, the vehicle or the words that explain the tenor, and the ground or the motivation of the metaphor.
The metaphors in the poem Sci-Fi are about the comparison between the situations that happen in the poem and spacy image like lines, curves, direction, corners, nuance and also words related to science. Then, the metaphors in the poem Don’t You Wonder, Sometimes? (Section 3) are about comparison between Bowie, the existence of Bowie, Bowie’s lifestyle and something like unique creature and the words which represent the charisma of Bowie, it is to express love of the poet itself. The metaphors in the poem The Universe as Primal Scream are to tell the readers about how annoying the kids are by comparing their scream with something like exploding universe, death, heaven, and human body.
