ABSTRACT

MEMORIAN ERI SAPUTRA, (N1A5 14 096), AN ANALYSIS OF DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACT IN “THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY” NOVEL BY J.R.R TOLKIEN, A Thesis. Language and Literature Department. “The Hobbit” is a novel that contains a lot of things in terms of linguistic that has not been revealed especially in directive speech act. This study aims to describe the directive speech act which is used in “The Hobbit” novel. This research used descriptive qualitative method because the data are in form of words and utterances rather than the numbers. This research used Holloway and Wheeler qualitative data analysis. The sources of this research are the speech in the novel spoken by the characters in “The Hobbit” novel and the movie. There are 4 steps in method of collecting data, they are data searching, reading, data reduction and coding. There are also 4 steps in method of data analysis, they are identifying, classifying, interpreting and concluding. The result of this research described as follows: The writer divided the data into four, first is data for requestives, second is data for question, third data is for requirement and the last is data for prohibitive. The writer found 12 data of requestives, they are including in order (7 data), inviting (2 data), asking (1 data) and beg (2 data). There are 11 data of question, they are including in question (7 data) and query (4 data), there are 5 data of requirements, they are including in require (1data), charge (1 data), instruct (2 data) and command (1 data), there are also 10 data of prohibitives including in prohibit (10 data). In the data of directive speech act, the statement of requirement very rarely appear in this novel.
