THE EFFECT OF NURSERY RHYMES ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT
(A Case at VB Grade of SD Negeri 10 Poasia)

In Elementary School, the focus of English teaching should be on vocabulary. The student’s problem in this study were English learning especially vocabulary is not fun because students were only asked to memorizing the words and that is very boring for students especially for children then vocabulary ability in VB grade are lower than VA grade. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigated the effect of using nursery rhymes on students’ English vocabulary achievement at VB grade of SDN 10 Poasia in terms noun and adjectives. The purpose of this study is to find out a significant effect after using nursery rhymes on the students’ English vocabulary achievement at VB grade of SDN 10 Poasia. This study applied pre-experimental design that was one group pre-test and post-test design. The subject of this study was VB grade of SDN 10 Poasia who were registered in academy year 2017-2018. The population of this study was all of V grade of SDN 10 Poasia consisted of 67. The technique of taking sample of this study was purposive sampling. The sample of this study was class VB consisting of 21 students’. The instrument of this study was vocabulary achievement test that is multiple choices consists of 37 numbers. The result showed that there was a significant effect of using nursery rhymes to improve students English vocabulary achievement. It was proved with the improvement of students’ mean score from pre-test and post-test. The mean score for pre-test was 34.81 and the mean score for post-test increases to 76.81. It was supported with the result of t-test, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 with α = 0.05. H1 is accepted because the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is below the α value. It means that teaching-learning process by using nursery rhymes is affecting on students vocabulary achievement at the VB grade of SDN 10 Poasia. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using nursery rhymes on students’ vocabulary achievement at the VB grade of SDN 10 Poasia.
