THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ LEARNING STRATEGIES AND THEIR ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT; A CASE STUDY OF SMA NEGERI 1 LAWA

The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is any significant correlation between student’s learning strategies and their English achievement at SMA N 1 Lawa or not. The research question of this study was “is there any significant correlation between student’s learning strategies and their English achievement or not”? The population of this study was taken students’ enrolled IPA in English subject class at SMA N 1 Lawa. The total of the population were 103 students’ divided in four classes.  Those students’ have included IPA 1 and IPA II classes. Further, this research is a quantitative study with correlation design. The data were collected by using a test to measure the level of student’s learning strategies and English achievement score collected from their teacher  in final score assessment of students IPA 1 and IPA II course to know student’s English achievement level. Moreover, the data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient with SPSS 16.0. The result indicates that there is a significant correlation between student’s learning strategies and their English achievement with r-obtained 0.418 (p=0.000). Further, it was categorizing as moderate correlation of both variables. As the conclusion for this study was there is a significant correlation between students’ learning strategies with their English achievement. Where, the more higher students’ learning strategies, the more higher students’ achievement.
