THE EFFECT OF TALKING STICK TECHNIQUE ON GRADE EIGHT
STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT AT SMP NEGERI 3 RAHA

This study aims at finding out whether there is a significant effect of talking stick technique on grade eight students at SMP Negeri 3 Raha. The research question formulated “is there any significant effect of talking stick technique on grade eight students’ speaking achievement at SMP Negeri 3 Raha?”. The design of the study was pre-experimental research design that consisted of one group pre-test and post- test. Post test was done to know students’ ability after giving treatment by using talking stick technique. The treatment was done for four meetings in experimental class. The population of this study was all students on the second year of SMP Negeri 3 Raha who were registered in academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this study was one class namely VIII1 which consisted of 26 students. The instrument of this study was oral test based on the topic about describing my classmate. The research used Wilcoxon Signed Ranks to analyze the result of the study of the effect of talking stick technique on students’ speaking achievement. The result shows that students’ speaking ability in post test were higher than in pretest. The hypothesis testing is found that the level of significant value is less than p. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It was caused by applying talking stick technique as technique on the learning process in the classroom can help the students speaking achievement. Then, students who get the stick can share their idea. It means that, every student have the same chance to speak English and share their idea. It can be concluded that applying talking stick technique shows a significant effect of students’ speaking achievement on grade eight at SMP Negeri 3 Raha.
