THE EFFECT OF EXTENSIVE READING ON STUDENT’S WRITING ABILITY AT SMAS KARTIKA XX-2 KENDARI

Student’s writing ability relates to student’s ability in applying the component of writing namely content, organization, language use, and mechanic. This research is conducted to find out whether there is or no significant effect of Extensive Reading on student’s writing ability at eleventh grade of SMAS Kartika XX-2 Kendari. The total sample is 30 students (15 students in experimental class and 15 in control class) which is taken from class XI IPA 1as experimental class and XI IPA 2 as control class of SMAS Kartika XX-2 Kendari. The design of this study used quasi experimental design with the techniques used descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. For the data collection, the researcher used written test, which include pre-test and post test; and instructional program of Extensive Reading. After conducting the test, non-parametric analysis is computed by using SPSS 16.0. To analyze the hypothesis, the researcher apply independent sample t-test. The result shows a significant improvement of writing ability in terms of vocabulary, language use, and mechanic before and after treatment in experimental class while in control class doesn’t. It can be seen from the gain of mean score of experimental class is 25.40 and the gain of mean score of control class only 6.36. The result of hypothesis testing shows that significant value (0.000) < (0.05) level of significant which is meant that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Thus, there is a significant effect of Extensive Reading on student’s writing ability.
