The study aims at finding out the significant effect of the introduction of journal writing with peer feedback on the students’ writing achievement as well as to investigate the students’ perception thereof. The study took place at second grade of Islamic senior high school, Madrasah Aliyah Attaqwa, Lapoa, in South of Konawe. The study employed two phases of reseach design, the first was a quasi experimental research design, where 22 students were put into experimental class and the other 22 were in control class. The second phase was descriptive qualitative design to investigate the students’ perception toward journal writing with peer feedback. The first phase data were collected using pre- and post-test. Then the second phase data were collected using direct administered questionnaire.
The finding show that there is significant difference between post-test (M= 69.95; SD= 8.312) and pre-test (M= 40.86; SD= 10.731) on the experimental group; t(21)= 15.633, p= 0.000. Moreover, the comparison between group (independent sample t-test) indicates that there is significant difference between the gain score of experimental group and control group; t(42)= 10.256, p= 0.000. The effect size calculation shows that the difference between the experimental group with the control group is large (d= 2.16).
The findings on students’ perception shows that the majority of students’ accept the use of peer feedback on journal writing; and they thought if journal writing with peer feedback is useful to increase their English writing skills. The students perceive that they enjoy writing the journal with peer feedback tasks as well as they enjoy giving feedback to their partner’s writing. The students give a positive perception to introduction of journal writing with peer feedback.
