THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE AND THEIR VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT OF SMP NEGERI 2 WADAGA

Attitude believed as an evaluative reaction to some referent or object, inferred on the basis of the individual’s beliefs or opinions about the referent (Gardner, 1985). In case of education, students’ attitude may relate to their academic achievement. The main purpose of this study was to find out whether there is any possible significant correlation between students’ attitude and their vocabulary achievement of SMP Negeri 2 Wadaga or not. The research question of this study was “Is there any significant correlation between students’ attitude and their vocabulary achievement at second grade of SMP Negeri 2 Wadaga?
The population of this study was all the second grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Wadaga Academic Year 2017/2018. The numbers of population were 59 students. In this study, total of sample was 39 students and taken by purposive sampling. Further, this research is a quantitative study with correlational design. The data were collected by using a questionnaire to measure student’ attitude towards vocabulary and a vocabulary achievement test to know their vocabulary achievement. Moreover, the data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation with SPSS 16.0.
The result indicates that there is a significant correlation between students’ attitude and their vocabulary achievement with r-obtained was 0.321 (p= 0.047). Further, it was categorized as low correlation between the two variables. Moreover, this study shows that students’ attitude have a positive correlation with their vocabulary achievement. It means that, students’ attitude have only little contribution to their vocabulary achievement. Therefore, students should develop their positive attitude towards vocabulary.
