Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the most common cardiovascular system diseases compared to other cardiovascular system diseases. Environmental factors associated with high blood pressure include stress. An inmate who faces a legal problem will experience a mental breakdown, this situation will become a stressor that causes stress to inmates. This study aims to determine the correlation of stress as a risk factor of hypertension incidence of inmates in the prison class IIa kendari city

This research is an observational analytic design with cross sectional approach. The independent variable was stress and the dependent variable was hypertension. This research was located in prison class IIa kendari city with 67 samples based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria selected by the total sampling method. These data were obtained from blood pressure obtained by using a measuring devices (aneroid sphygmomanometer) and distributed questionnaires. The result of data was processed by Chi-square statistic test and Prevalance Odds Ratio (POR).

The results of this study found that from the 67 respondents, 32 respondents (47,8%) were hypertension and 24 respondents (19,1%) were hypertension that have stress and hypertension. Based on Chi-square statistical test, t was found that between stress and hypertension showed p value of 0,014 < α (0,05). While, for the POR value was 3.562 CI 95% 1.259-10.084.

The conclusions of this study are stress correlated as a hypertension incidence in the prison class IIa kendari city.
