Sometimes, understanding the dialog in a movie is no easy task. A dialog might be interpreted directly using general knowledge but sometimes it can only be interpreted using special knowledge. Interpreting dialogs containing special knowledge requires what is called conversational implicature, especially particularized conversational implicature. The problem found in this study is Lone Survivor movie contains dialogs whose meanings can only be interpreted using conversational implicature. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of conversational implicature used by the characters in their dialogue in the Lone Survivor Movie and to describe how the conversational implicature affect the understanding of the dialogue. This study uses qualitative descriptive design and it aims at analyzing and decoding the implied meaning of the utterances of the movie using generalized and particularized implicature. The data were collected using coding technique and then put into a matrix. The data were analyzed by providing the full account of the generalized and particularized conversational implicature of the utterances in the dialog. The results show that the dialog in the Lone Survivor movie script could be analyzed using generalized and particularized implicature. It shows that the same utterances in the Lone Survivor’s dialog could be interpreted by using either generalized or particularized implicature. It implies that some utterances could be interpreted by using general knowledge, but other utterances can only be interpreted using special knowledge. The use of conversational implicature in this movie plays an important role in facilitating a more comprehensive understanding in the dialog of the movie. On the other hand, since this movie narrates the military operations in Afghanistan in 2005, it contains a lot of special codes which could only be understood by the members of the American Navy SEAL themselves. It signifies that the movie audience will find it difficult to encode and interpret those special codes, unless using the conversational implicature, especially particularized implicature.
