This study aims at analyzing the use of code mixing contained in Dear Nathan novel by Erisca febriani. The problems of this research are (1) what are the types of code mixing used in Dear Nathan novel by Erisca Febriani? (2) what are the reasons of using code mixing based on the context in Dear Nathan novel by Erisca Febriani?. The problem of this study is analyzed by using Suwito’s theory and Hofman’s theory. The objectives of this study are to describe the types of Indonesian and English code mixing used in the novel entitled Dear Nathan and to describe the reasons of using code mixing based on context in the novel entitled Dear Nathan. The source of data in this study is Dear Nathan novel which published in 2016. The writer used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through reading, identifying, and coding and then the writer analyzes those data by using the theory of code mixing. From the result of this study, the writer found that the types of code mixing are code mixing in the form of word insertion, code mixing in the form of phrase insertion and code mixing in the form of hybrid. The writer also found the reasons of using code mixing, they are talking about a particular topic, inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector (interjection), softening/ strengthening request, and because of real lexical need.
