AN ANALISYS OF THE USE OF SPEECH FUNCION BY ENGLISH TEACHER AT SMA N 5 KENDARI

Speech function that used in giving instruction is important because a major part of class time in learning process is taken up by teachers. Where teachers should use speech function appropriate with classroom context. So this study apply speech function theory to analyse functional speech of teacher’s utterances. This study investigated the types of speech function by English teacher’s instruction. The research question of this study were 1). What speech functions are used by English teachers at SMAN 5 KENDARI? and 2). How is the speech function accurately used by English teachers at SMAN 5 KENDARI?. The objective of this study were 1). To find out the speech function used by English teachers at SMAN 5 KENDARI and 2). To find out the speech function accurately used by English teachers at SMAN 5 KENDARI. The design of this study was qualitative method. The technique of data collection were 1). The researcher observed the condition of the class, and the way to communicate in the classroom while teaching learning process. 2). The researcher made notes to describe the situation or activity in the class. 3). The researcher recorded the interaction between the teacher and students during the learning process in the class by using video recorder. The technique of data analysis were 1). The researcher transcribed and transliterated the utterances of English teacher’s speech through classroom interaction based on video recorder to written text. 2). The researcher corpus the data from video. The corpus means to seperate utterances that were not the main source of the researcher. 3) The researcher classified the data. Classification is consist of kind of speech functions from teacher’s utterances. 4) The researcher analyzed the accurately of speech function used followed by an example. 5). The last, concluding the data analysis. The result of this study shows that there were five types of speech function found on English teacher’s uterances. Each type accurately base on theory of speech function and context where there were 2 utterance not accurately with type of speech function and context.
